چکیده

For the investigation of the dynamics of heavy-ion beams penetrating hot dense plasma at the Z6 area at GSI an experimental setup was developed, which allows for diagnosing a directly laser-heated plasma target, and measuring the charge state and energy loss of an ion beam after / in it [1, 2]. The varying energy loss of the ion beam in the target (solid—plasma—vacuum) is determined in a TOFlike technique, in which temporal shifts (of the UNILAC period of 9.224 ns) between individual ion micro pulses are recorded. Aiming at future experiments with indirectly heated plasma targets an ion stop detector was designed to match the high requirements for: repetition rate, time resolution, high ion& low lightsensitivity, and radiation hardness as well.

The Diamond Project at Gsi - Perspectives

Heavy-ion experiments at GSI cover nuclear and atomic physics, related basic and applied research in plasma physics and material science as well as biophysics including tumor therapy with carbon ions. After low-energy sections, the heavy-ion synchrotron (SIS) provides pulsed, cooled ion beams up to 2 GeV/amu of beam intensities up to 10 ions/spill. All kind of ions from protons with Z=1 to U io...

Development of large area polycrystalline diamond detectors for fast timing application of high-energy heavy-ion beams

We have studied the effects of electrode fabrication and detector capacitance on the time resolution of large area electronic grade polycrystalline diamond sensors, made using chemical vapour deposition, that are suitable for time of flight measurements of heavy ions at relativistic velocities. Sensors were prepared both in house, with Al or Au metal contacts, and commercially fabricated with A...

Development of a spectrometer on CVD diamond basis for heavy ion charge state measurements

The interaction of heavy ions with hot dense lasergenerated plasma, especially the energy loss of the ions, is one of the main fields of research of the plasma physics group at GSI [1]. The investigated plasma is generated by the irradiation of a thin carbon foil by intense laser beams from the nhelix or the PHELIX laser systems, while the heavy ions are generated by the UNILAC accelerator of G...

Radiation-Hard Detectors for Spectroscopy and Timing

In the frame program of heavy-ion physics experiments electronic-grade PolyCrystalline diamond has been used for the development of large-area solid-state detectors able to work reliably in destructive heavy-ion beams. The success of all running diamond detectors at GSI is based upon the radiation hardness and response time of this type of material and on the huge ionisation signals produced by...

p-CVD diamond heavy-ion beam detector with integrated electronics

For the new ToF Barrel of FOPI, [1], a new beam detector based on polycrystalline-CVD diamond was developed. The new device replaces the existing beam monitoring system which comprise a ToF Start detector and a beam-halo detector, both built from plastic scintillator material. However, since the employed diamonds are not sensitive to minimum ionizing particles the new device can be used efficie...
